A woman who stayed at the Disneyland Hotel in California was awarded $100,000 in damages related to a bed bug infestation. According to the woman’s lawsuit, she was bitten by bed bugs while sleeping at the Anaheim hotel on April 9, 2018. The conditions of the hotel during her stay were described as “slum-type” in her complaint.

Financial, Physical and Emotional Damages

The injured woman was bitten by bed bugs several times overnight, which caused her to suffer sleeplessness, physical pain and sickness. The complainant also described feeling anxious, distressed and humiliated by the bed bug experience. She reported the bed bugs to hotel management during her stay, and according to her lawsuit, hotel management may have already received similar complaints from other guests.

Violation of California Law

The Disneyland Hotel was accused of violating California law by allowing the woman’s hotel room to be booked in such a filthy condition. According to the applicable law, hotel bedding must be clean, dry, sanitary and free of bed bugs. The woman’s lawsuit also accused the hotel of failing to remedy the bed bug problem after they were informed about it.

Settlement Reached in March

Disney reached a $100,000 settlement with the injured woman in March 2022; however, it took a couple months before the payment was fulfilled by the company. The amount that was awarded by the Los Angeles Superior Court was requested to cover the woman’s hotel expenses as well as several different types of damages. The victim’s damages included physical injury, medical care, emotional distress, lost income and lawyer fees.
