Many homes in California have ceiling fans that provide much-needed airflow during hot and humid weather. If you have a ceiling fan in your home that’s made by Honeywell or Harbor Breeze, you may want to check the model number. Thousands of ceiling fans have been recalled recently for a dangerous problem.
Fan Blades Detaching
Both Honeywell and Harbor Breeze ceiling fans are manufactured by Hong Kong China Electric Appliance Manufacture Company. The company has recalled two of its ceiling fan models over detaching blades. Both of the ceiling fan models are identical to each other, but they are sold under two different names:
- Harbor Breeze Belleisle Bay 52-inch
- Honeywell Rio 52-inch
So far, there have been 60 reports about fan blades coming unattached while the fans were spinning, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, or CPSC. None of the incidents resulted in any injuries, but there was drywall damage. In a product liability claim lawsuit, the manufacturer of a defective product could be ordered to compensate a consumer for damaged property.
When and Where the Fans Were Sold
The recalled ceiling fans were sold for around $150 between February 2018 and August 2021. Several online retailers including Amazon.com, Wayfair.com, and Overstock.com carried the recalled fans. If you think you may own one of the affected ceiling fans, you can check the fan to see whether “HKC” is printed on the date label. You can then contact Hong Kong China Electric Appliance Manufacture Company for a replacement fan. The CPSC is advising consumers to stop using the recalled fans immediately and then destroy and dispose of them.
